The Man Who Turned Loss Into a Legacy — One Cheesecake at a Time

From Real Estate Collapse to Metro Detroit Dessert Staple

If you haven’t been to Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes in Oak Park yet, this is your sign.

What started as a personal passion in a family kitchen has grown into one of Metro Detroit’s most respected scratch bakeries, supplying more than 100 restaurants across Michigan and building a loyal following far beyond Oak Park.

But it didn’t start that way.

When Everything Fell Apart

In 2008, as the real estate market collapsed, Patrick Peteet watched the career he had built since the age of 18 unravel almost overnight. The industry he had dedicated his adult life to was suddenly gone.

For some, that would have been the end of the story.

For Patrick, it became the beginning.

Long before Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes was a storefront on 9 Mile Road, it was an 11-year-old kid baking cheesecakes in his kitchen and giving them away to friends and family.

He didn’t see it as a business. Everyone else did.

When real estate slowed, people started asking for orders. Then more orders. Then wholesale. Then restaurant accounts.

In 2010, after losing the family business his late father had built, Patrick made a decision that changed everything. He opened Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes on September 6, 2010, in Oak Park.

That date marks the moment passion became purpose.

What Makes Peteet’s Different?

Walk into Peteet’s and you’ll understand immediately. This is not a shortcut bakery.

Everything is made from scratch daily. No preservatives. No fillers. No cutting corners.

The signature difference is the two-layer baking process.

Each cheesecake is baked, layered again, and baked a second time. The result is denser, creamier, and more complex than the typical single-pour cheesecake most bakeries serve.

It’s a difference you can taste on the first bite.

Peteet’s has created more than 90 total flavors over the years, with about 30 rotating at any given time in the retail store.

Superman. Sweet Potato. Turtle. Key Lime. Strawberry Delight. Cheesecake cannolis. Banana pudding cheesecake.

And yes, they’re as good as they sound.

From Local Bakery to Metro Detroit Staple

Peteet’s now supplies more than 100 restaurants across Michigan.

What began as a home-baked gift has become one of Metro Detroit’s most recognized wholesale cheesecake brands without sacrificing quality.

That’s a Detroit story if there ever was one.
