Detroit residents and businesses in the 313 area code must begin using 10-digit dialing for local calls starting October 7, 2025.

 

This update comes as the new 679 overlay area code is set to debut November 7, 2025.

 

Since April 7, a six-month permissive period has allowed both seven and 10-digit dialing, but after October 7, seven-digit calls will no longer go through.

 

Current 313 phone numbers will not change.

 

The 679 area code will be assigned to new numbers once the supply of 313 numbers is expected to run out in late 2027.

 

Residents are urged to update devices and contact lists programmed for seven-digit dialing, including systems like medical alerts and security.

 

Three-digit emergency numbers such as 911 and 988 will remain unaffected.
